Recife is full of contrasts. Few people are rich and many people are poor & very poor. Poor people live in small houses in the suburbs. This picture: small colorful houses.

Coconut trees

Brazil did not have coconut trees when it was colonized by Portugal in 1500. The Portuguese navigators brought coconuts to Brazil from India. Then, today the brazilian coast is full of coconut trees. Picture by Mateus Mendes, my son.

Carnival is coming - the giant cock

In Saturday, there is a carnival block called Cock of Dawn ("Galo da Madrugada" in Portuguese). Million people have fun in the Cock of Dawn parade. City Hall puts a giant cock in a bridge in downtown to celebrate the parade and Carnival.
